Dental Implant Myths

Dental Implant Myths

Like any other dental treatment, dental implants have various myths about them. A myth is a commonly held belief that is not true. When it comes to considering dental implant treatment, it is important to separate fact from fiction to be sure that you can make an informed decision regarding your oral health. After all, you will want to base your decision of facts, rather than myths. Here are some of the most common myths surrounding dental implants that you should be aware of:

Dental Implants are Extremely Painful

Many people avoid getting dental implants because they think that getting dental implants is extremely painful. Contrary to popular belief, having dental implants placed is not as painful as many people think. For starters, dental implants are placed in the jawbone which contains very few nerves. Additionally, they are placed with the use of dental anesthetics and sedation to keep you calm and comfortable during the procedure. The majority of people who have had dental implants placed note that the procedure is less painful than a tooth extraction. Even after dental implant surgery, patients generally describe the discomfort as mild and note that it fades rather quickly.

Dental Implants Look Fake

Yes, dental implants are artificial tooth roots that support fake teeth. However, the dental prosthetic attached to dental implants are designed to resemble natural teeth and to blend in with any surrounding teeth. When placed by an experienced implant dentist, dental implants are hidden below the gum line and look no different than natural teeth.

Dental Implants are Too Expensive

Like any other restorative dental procedure, there is a cost associated with dental implants. Although the initial cost may be higher than other restoration methods, dental implants have a much longer lifespan and are less likely to become damaged over time. In fact, modern dental implants are lasting around 20 years and then some. Not only that, but people with dental insurance may be able to obtain partial coverage to offset the cost. Many implant dentists also offer various financing options to make dental implants attainable for their patients.

Any Dentist Can Place Dental Implants

Unfortunately not all dentists have equal abilities when it comes to placing dental implants. Because of this, it is important to do your research in order to find the right implant dentist. Ideally, it is recommended that you see an implant dentist because they have extensive knowledge and experience with dental implant placement. Additionally, dental implant dentists are often up to date with the latest in dental implant technology, which will make your treatment go much smoother.

You Can’t Eat with Dental Implants

Immediately after having dental implants, your dentist will place you on a temporary soft foods diet until your implants can heal. This is essential to ensure that the implant will not shift in position as it fuses with the surrounding bone. Once the implant has fused with the jawbone, you can return to your normal diet. Out of all the dental restoration methods, dental implants have the least amount of dietary restrictions once they are healed.
