Tips for Taking Care of Your Invisalign Trays

Woman using Invisalign

Invisalign® is an attractive option for straightening your teeth. You ditch the traditional metal braces for a set of clear, plastic retainers. These retainers stay in your mouth for about 20-22 hours each day, and every two weeks or so, you trade in your old trays for new one. Little by little, your smile is perfected.

Here at New Teeth Chicago Dental, we want you to look and feel confident with the best smile possible. Dr. Irfan Atcha is here to offer you personalized care using innovative dental and orthodontic treatment options, including Invisalign.

Why choose Invisalign

Invisalign is a fantastic option because it doesn’t involve any painful wires or tightening like with traditional braces. Also, Invisalign is visually appealing, because it is transparent (as the name suggests).

In addition, many people who are professionals or students choose Invisalign for its look. Active individuals also prefer Invisalign, as the trays can be easily removed for sports and other activities. Don’t forget, however, that it’s very important to keep your Invisalign trays clean and in good condition to maintain your oral hygiene.

Cleaning is important

Daily cleaning

One easy way to take care of your Invisalign trays is to carefully wash them at least once in the morning and once at night. To do this, remove the Invisalign tray and run it under lukewarm water.

Have a toothbrush that is dedicated to cleaning your trays and gently scrub the inside and outside of the trays with toothpaste. Then, run your trays under lukewarm water once more to remove any leftover residue.

Occasional deep clean

If you notice that there is buildup inside the tray that doesn’t come off with regular toothbrush cleaning, then consider doing a deep clean. For this, your dentist should provide you with a sanitizing solution that you’ll soak your trays in for several minutes. This should break down any calcium or tartar that has built up in the tray.

Always store your trays in their containers

After cleaning or deep cleaning your trays, let them air dry for a couple minutes before either placing back in your mouth or storing them in the designated container.

To ensure that the shape of the tray is maintained in good condition, be sure to always store them when not in use. You wouldn’t want your trays to be mistaken for a chew toy by your dog!

Your dentist is your resource

Lastly, if you notice that the tray is misshapen or seems like it has been bent or altered in some way, don’t hesitate to call your dentist right away and get the trays examined for any issues.
